What Is Local To Oakbank Care Home?
We are located in the heart of Scotland, in the beautiful Strathearn countryside. Crieff has spectacular scenery, whether you want to explore the nature and hills, take in the visitor attractions or partake in a round of golf. You can enjoy award-winning restaurants that the area has to offer and appreciate the town and local, independent shops.
In 1690, the River Earn was bridged here, meaning Crieff was already well established. Over time, Crieff became the site of Scotland’s first public lending library and the town’s wealth and growth stemmed from its great communication links both to the Lowlands and Highlands. By 1700 herds of highland cattle from across the northern and western Scotland were driven along the roads towards the cattle markets or trysts within Crieff. Each year, up to 30,000 cattle arrived on foot for sale within the town. Crieff began gaining a reputation for wildness as Highland drovers far from home started to enjoy the fruits of their efforts.
Glenturret Distillery in Glen Turret, north of the town was licensed in 1775, now known as The Famous Grouse Experience; the most visited distillery in Scotland. Glenturret is known to have ‘Scotland’s oldest distillery’, although there were other stills in the Highlands before 1775, none had such a beautiful location alongside product.
