Residents Enjoy Nostalgic Steam Train Adventure for National Train Week

Residents from Oakbank Care Home recently enjoyed a delightful outing to the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway, soaking up the sunshine and the sights of a bygone era to celebrate National Train Week.

The trip was especially meaningful as one of our residents spent his career working on the railways, making this nostalgic journey a perfect way to honour his past and share fond memories with others.

It was a glorious day from start to finish, with bright blue skies setting the scene for a memorable excursion. Upon arrival at the station, residents were warmly welcomed by friendly volunteer station masters, whose enthusiasm and knowledge added to the authentic experience.

Boarding a beautifully restored steam train, residents were thrilled to find themselves seated in the comfort of a first-class carriage. As the train gently pulled away from the platform, the atmosphere was filled with excitement and chatter. Many of our residents reminisced about childhood adventures and long-forgotten journeys taken by rail in years gone by.

To make the trip even more special, Oakbank’s talented chef had prepared delicious packed lunches, which everyone enjoyed as the countryside rolled by. Some residents also had the chance to visit the charming station café, where they were treated to a lovely cup of tea and a slice of carrot cake.

One resident marvelled, “I’ve never been on a steam train before,” while another smiled and said, “We sat in first class – I’ve had a wonderful time.”

There was plenty to see and do at the busy station, with steam trains regularly passing through and a fascinating display of railway memorabilia on show. Residents particularly enjoyed chatting with the volunteers, who proudly shared an old suitcase bearing the destination "Crieff" – a nostalgic reminder of the now-closed Crieff Railway Station.

The visit to Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway was a resounding success and a joyful reminder of the importance of getting out, enjoying the sunshine, and engaging with the community. It sparked conversations, shared memories, and provided a meaningful connection to the past for our residents.

We look forward to many more special outings like this one, where history, sunshine, and good company come together to create lasting memories.
