Residents Reap the Rewards of Blooming Vegetable Garden

Oakbank's vibrant vegetable garden has been a hive of activity in recent months, as residents have rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty with a variety of planting and gardening tasks. From early seed sowing to outdoor transplanting, the care home's gardening club has become a much-anticipated weekly event, held every Monday.
The green-fingered initiative began earlier this year with a group trip to the local garden centre, where residents selected a delightful mix of fruit, vegetables and herbs they wished to grow. With the support of local nursery children, the first seeds were carefully planted in Oakbank's greenhouse, giving them a warm and nurturing start to their growing journey.
Now that the weather has improved, residents have taken their flourishing young plants outdoors into the care home's dedicated vegetable patch. Gardening enthusiasts at Oakbank, many of whom have enjoyed a lifelong passion for horticulture, have relished the chance to revisit a favourite hobby. Others have discovered a newfound appreciation for the joys of growing their own food.
The garden club provides more than just nutritious produce - it offers a valuable opportunity for residents to spend time outside in the fresh air and sunshine, which is known to support both physical and emotional wellbeing. Gardening also offers gentle physical activity and a sense of purpose, while the intergenerational element of planting with the nursery children has brought smiles and laughter all around.
The home's chefs are equally excited about the initiative. With fresh herbs and vegetables just steps away from the kitchen, they're looking forward to incorporating homegrown ingredients into their seasonal menus, enhancing both flavour and nutrition.
In addition to vegetables and herbs, Oakbank's garden has recently welcomed some new residents of the insect variety. On National Bee Day, residents and staff installed bee houses to help support local pollinators. The initiative not only boosts the success of the vegetable garden but also plays a small but important role in promoting biodiversity.
With tomatoes ripening, herbs flourishing, and bees buzzing busily among the blooms, the Oakbank vegetable garden is set to be a centre of activity, nourishment and joy throughout the summer months and beyond.
